External Job Description
In this role, you will be responsible for analysing, validating, and optimising thermodynamic and aerodynamic cycle performance models of propulsion systems, including micro turbojets and turbofan engines. You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to support engine and component design, development, and testing activities across the full product lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Engine Performance Modelling & Analysis
- Support development and refinement of steady-state and transient engine cycle models from preliminary design through production.
- Conduct engine cycle matching, identifying station discrepancies and applying corrections to ensure physically consistent performance behaviour.
- Optimise engine performance cycles to balance thrust, fuel consumption, and thermal constraints across key operating conditions.
- Perform design, off-design, and far off-design trade studies to assess performance impact of design and technology changes.
Test Data Analysis & Validation
- Collect, process, and analyse engine and test rig data to calibrate cycle performance models.
- Transform test data to standard ambient conditions and prepare performance reports for ground and altitude testing.
- Validate whether engine performance meets technical requirements (thrust, endurance, efficiency, operability) and provide structured feedback to design teams.
- Support root cause analysis of engine test issues and integrate findings into performance models.
Testing & System Integration Support
- Collaborate with test teams to define and align test plans and procedures in accordance with PTC 22 and ISO 2314 standards.
- Ensure compatibility assessment of engine systems including fuel, lubrication, and cooling subsystems.
- Participate in engine test campaigns and support troubleshooting during live test operations.
- Interface with systems engineering teams to ensure compliance with qualification standards such as MIL-STD-810.
Reporting & Communication
- Prepare and present technical reports, engine performance decks, and design best practices.
- Communicate findings clearly to engineering, testing, and management stakeholders.
- Support knowledge capture and continuous improvement of modelling methodologies.
Mandatory Qualifications
- Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Thermal Power Engineering, or related discipline
- 5–8 years experience, or PhD + 4 years minimum in gas turbine engine performance engineering
- Experience with 0D engine cycle modelling tools (e.g., GasTurb, NPSS, TTECTrA)
- Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink or Python scripting
- Hands-on experience in engine or test rig setup, execution, and data acquisition
Familiarity with engine performance testing and validation methodologies - Exposure to 1D/2D simulation methods is an advantage
Key Skills
- Strong understanding of aero engine performance, thermodynamics, and aerothermal systems
- Practical engineering judgment in engine operation, testing, and instrumentation
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional engineering environments
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills
- Excellent communication and technical reporting capability
- Ability to manage priorities and deliver results in a structured environment
