ABOUT THE ROLE

Provides direct supervision of all assigned Lab Analyst(s) at AL TAIF TECHNICAL SERVICES LLC.  Performs work in the study of extracting, refining, alloying or processing metals, and in the characterisation of properties and performance of metals under conditions of use.  Performs a percentage of the overall inspections/tests being conducted in the Failure and Materials Testing Laboratory (FAMTL).  Assists in the preparation of test directives; monitors tests and collects test results.  Prepares analyses and reports on portions of larger projects or on individual projects and presents the findings along with any recommendations.  Ensures all actions are accomplished in accordance with all technical manuals, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) specifications.  Ensures the process is maintained within the latest ISO 9001 Quality Management System, ISO31000:2018 Risks Management, ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System, and ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standards. .  

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide direct supervision of all assigned Lab Analysts(s) within the FAMTL while serving as the metallurgical engineering expert.
• Review the methodologies used in developing reliability predictions and test procedures in order to assess effectiveness.
• Monitor state-of-the-art technology in the fields of reliability, maintainability and testing.
• Review and evaluate data developed from tests in order to isolate problems in component design, material design, material characteristics and other factors.
• Evaluate materials design, manufacturing processes and usage to determine root causes of failures and recommend changes in design, processing and any limitations of usage based on the findings.
• Provide technical assistance to prototyping and Fabrication Workshop teams on problems involving chemical composition, forging and heat treatment.
• Perform mechanical testing, analyse and appraise metallurgical aspects relative to vehicle and weapons systems malfunctions.
• Advise the design, modelling and simulation teams on problems requiring design changes which may affect product quality and reliability.
• Review weapon system specifications and make recommendations on reliability, maintainability and test specifications to be incorporated into procurement contracts.
• Provide technical assistance to contracting officials on matters involving interpretation of specifications and drawings related to requirements of materials or contractor’s technical competence.
• Provide consulting services to quality assurance personnel on matters concerning definition of criticality of cracks, inclusions, porosity and other defects and whether or not acceptance standards are met.
• Develop and enforce acceptance standards to prevent introduction of substandard materials that might be hazardous to mission fulfilment or would jeopardise human life.
• Monitor projects related to the development of non-destructive testing methods to ensure that the latest technological and scientific developments are evaluated and applied to the quality assurance system, and related inspection and test equipment.
• Review technical data packages for adequacy of requirements and provide appropriate comments.
• Specify the type and amount of product testing for first article, acceptance, comparison and special tests
• Investigate failure reports and field complaints, analyse quality problems and prepare recommendations for corrective action.
• Calculate and report estimates of the reliability and maintainability of items using data developed from testing of the stockpile sample, surveillance inspection, critical components evaluation, malfunction investigation, production and acceptance testing, and from the study of manufacturing processes.
• Serve on special committees and technical working groups.
• Ensure all issued tools, equipment and high-value property is maintained in a serviceable condition, routinely inventoried and safeguarded.
• Develop and monitor the training of all assigned Lab Analyst(s) on all applicable processes.
• Maintain the confidentiality and security of all company information.
• Support other members of the Engineering Department in fulfilling their roles.
• Perform other duties as required by the Metallurgist, FAMTL, Senior Manager, Engineering and Director, Engineering.
• Required to report Engineering Department operational risks and follow AL TAIF approved procedures for risks
• Ensure Engineering Department staff are informed about risk management procedure and have received appropriate basic risk training related to ISO31000:2018 Risks Management, and ISO 45001 Occupational Health.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor degree in Science or associate’s degree in chemistry, physics, metallurgy, or materials engineering with an understanding of metal, rubber, or resin process technologies required.
• Minimum 8 years of hands-on experience in metallurgy is required.
• A minimum of three to five years of experience supervising and/or managing a team is preferred.
• An in-depth knowledge of material processes; understanding and experience operating failure analysis tools such as SEM, XRF and XRD; specimen preparation; and physical material testing equipment is required.
• Previous military or automotive industry experience is an advantage.
• The ability to interpret technical data, drawings and engineering documents is required.
• A demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and make independent judgements effectively.
• Knowledge in the use of Microsoft Office software is preferred.
• The ability to communicate effectively in English, both in writing and verbally is required.
• Have, or be able to obtain a valid UAE driver’s license.
