External Job Description

POWERTECH Engines is seeking experienced Mechanical Design Engineers at Lead, Senior and Principal levels to support the development of advanced turbojet and turbofan propulsion systems.

This role will be responsible for the mechanical design and optimisation of critical gas-turbine components and systems, including compressors, turbines, shafts, bearing systems, stationary structures, externals, accessories and gearbox-related components. The successful candidate will combine strong gas-turbine design knowledge with mechanical integrity, manufacturability, analysis and technical leadership capability.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and optimise gas-turbine static and rotating systems for life, weight, manufacturability, reliability and cost.
• Develop mechanical designs for components including disks, shafts, couplings, connection elements, bearing systems and stationary structures.
• Support the design of engine externals and accessories such as fuel pumps, oil pumps and bleed-line systems.
• Contribute to accessory gearbox and shaft power off-take design and sizing.
• Apply Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and define assembly and manufacturing requirements.
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings and manufacturing guidelines.
• Perform or support mechanical integrity assessments using FEA and lower-order analysis methods.
• Conduct FMECA activities to support safety, reliability and operability assessments.
• Support FRACAS activities, root-cause investigations and corrective design actions.
• Review designs, analyses and simulations and define appropriate verification and testing guidelines.
• Identify technical and programme risks and develop mitigation plans.
• Work closely with aerodynamics, materials, thermal, manufacturing, systems and test teams.
• Provide technical mentoring, design reviews and constructive guidance to junior engineers.
• Support project planning, prioritisation and delegation of technical activities where required.

Candidate Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Approximately 5–15+ years of relevant experience, depending on Senior, Lead or Principal level.
• Strong background in gas-turbine propulsion, mechanical design, structural integrity and heat transfer.
• Experience in one or more of the following:
– Gas-turbine externals and accessories
– Disks, shafts, couplings and rotating structures
– Bearing and support systems
– Accessory gearboxes and shaft power off-take
– FMECA / FRACAS and design assurance
• Proficiency in CAD tools such as Siemens NX, SolidWorks or equivalent.
• Experience with PLM systems such as Teamcenter, Windchill or similar.
• Experience with FEA or engineering simulation methods.
• Knowledge of GD&T, engineering drawings and manufacturing processes.
• Programming or analytical experience using MATLAB/Simulink, C or similar tools is advantageous.
• Strong awareness of materials, structural mechanics and aerodynamic considerations relevant to gas-turbine design.
• Fluent English with strong communication and presentation skills.
