External Job Description

In this role you will be responsible of analysing, validating and optimizing the thermodynamic and aerodynamic cycle performance models of propulsion systems such as micro turbojets and turbofan engines.  You will work closely with multidisciplinary departments to support engine and component design, development and testing.  As we continue to expand our air power design and manufacture capabilities, we are seeking for an experienced propulsion performance engineer.

Key responsibilities

  • Support in the development and refinement of steady-state and transient engine cycle performance models throughout all design stages from preliminary concept to production.
  • Collect and analyse engine test rig data to calibrate and align engine cycle performance models. Identify the station parameters that require further matching and determine deltas and factors to achieve a consistent and physical engine performance behaviour.
  • Validate whether the engine design on the test rig meets specified technical requirements i.e. performance, endurance, and provide feedback to design and testing teams for potential improvements.
  • Transform and correct to ambient conditions the collected test data and prepare and engine performance reports for ground and altitude tests.
  • Optimize engine performance cycles to balance thrust, fuel consumption, and thermal limits for key operating points to meet mission-specific requirements.
  • Conduct trade-off engine cycle studies to evaluate performance impacts of design changes and new component technologies at design, off-design, and far off-design conditions.
  • Collaborate with the turbomachinery and combustor design teams to ensure aerothermal requirements are met during component and system-level design.
  • Assess the performance compatibility of the engine test with the fuel, lubrication, cooling subsystems.
  • Work actively with testing team to be informed and align the preparation of test plans and procedures according to international standards such as PTC 22 and ISO2314.
  • Participate with testing team to analyse root causes of technical issues encountered during engine testing, whilst contribute to the solution of them.  Incorporate such feedback into the cycle performance models where possible to improve prediction fidelity.
  • Liaise with engine systems team to ensure the engine design meets the stakeholder and system requirements according, for instance, according to MIL-STD-810 for further qualification.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, performance decks, and design\best practices.

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Thermal Power Engineering, or related discipline
  • 5–8 years experience, or PhD + 4 years minimum in gas turbine engine performance engineering
  • Experience with 0D engine cycle modelling tools (e.g., GasTurb, NPSS, TTECTrA)
  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink or Python scripting
  • Hands-on experience in engine or test rig setup, execution, and data acquisition
Familiarity with engine performance testing and validation methodologies
  • Exposure to 1D/2D simulation methods is an advantage

Key Skills

  • Strong understanding of aero engine performance, thermodynamics, and aerothermal systems
  • Practical engineering judgment in engine operation, testing, and instrumentation
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional engineering environments
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills
  • Excellent communication and technical reporting capability
  • Ability to manage priorities and deliver results in a structured environment
